Dr. P. Kolandasamy, HOD ( Tamil) , KMGIPSR, Puducherry.

Youth of India occupies a good number in demography. Future of the country depends upon the knowledge, attitude & skill of the present youth / students. Hence it is the basic concern of the academicians & Government in inculcating a rich aptitude, an optimistic attitude and necessary awareness in the youth/ students. To achieve the youth empowerment and well being, scientific temperament of the youth is imperative. This article explains how scientific temperament in youth may be inculcated through TirukuRaL.

TirukuRaL : An introduction :

‘Tirukkural’ etymologically means the ‘holy couplets,’ i.e. a text having two lines with seven words each in the Tamil poetic ‘kuRaL venba’ metre. It consists of  1330 couplets with 133 chapters each contains 10 couplets.            Tirukkural is a moral compendium which has been classified under three major headings; aram (individual morality ), porul ( civic responsibility ), kamam ( sexual/ family morality). The ideological implication of these titles is that one must earn wealth through righteous means and enjoyment becomes imminent through that which leads to enlightenment. It influenced Gandhiji to utter “ The end to be justified by means”  This view is similar to the Sanskrit tradition of dharma, artha, kama and moksa and Life skills as posited by WHO.

Tiruvalluvar’s philosophy is that  man ought to live as a true human being and cherish all the human values, promote earthly virtues, establish social harmony, engage in domestic life, follow political ideologies, develop mutual assistance, adhere to the life of renunciation, enjoy all kinds of pleasures, contemplate deeply on a few metaphysical issues etc. Tiruvalluvar did not write anything about moksa or liberation. Probably, he might have thought that life on this earth is to be lived perfectly and honestly than contemplating upon life beyond death. His preaching is over all well being of human by adopting righteous ways in life, which is useful for inculcating scientific temperament among people, particularly in the youth.

Scientific temperament : An introduction:

Scientific temperament refers to an individual's attitude of logical and rational thinking. An individual is considered to have scientific temper if s/he employs a scientific method of decision-making in everyday life. Developing a scientific temperament will equip students with the skills and habits necessary to make informed decisions and contribute positively to society. A scientific temperament has always been an essential characteristic of an individual's development.

Article 51A h of the Indian Constitution which deals with fundamental duties makes it a duty of every citizen to develop scientific temper. It is the scientific temper that helps in developing secularism, humanism & spirit of enquiry and reform. The Government of India, through the National Council for Science and Technology Communication, dedicated the 28 February National Science Day of 2014 to the theme "Fostering Scientific Temper". Knowledge and Awareness Mapping Platform (KAMP) is an initiative, to map Scientific temperament and aptitude of young students based on their assessment outcome and nurture them as a responsible citizen /future scientists of the country. It believes that every student is blessed with a core talent and aimed to bring the best in them through this platform.

Didactic teaching approach:

Didactic teaching is a teaching method that focuses on teachers giving lessons to students. Typically, teachers who exercise didactic teaching create structured lessons that focus on lectures. Teachers can use diverse teaching methods depending on the needs of their students, their personal preferences and other relevant factors. Didactic teaching is often well-suited for teaching basic subjects and instructing students who thrive with structured directions.
