People who are not in the habit of making fine distinctions think that the two words are synonyms, and some answers here on Quora will even tell you that. Some dictionaries, too, follow common usage and define the two words in very similar ways so that they appear to mean the same thing.

However, there is a subtle but important difference between them that is worth maintaining. Fate is arbitrary. It is some unseen external force that decides what happens to each person, and its decisions are random, not based on any sound principles or criteria. “Fate” is invoked to explain why bad things happen to good people and vice versa. When a good person has misfortune, we might say: “It was just her fate”. The idea of “fate” has very primitive roots going back to the times when people believed that “the gods” meddled in human affairs and caused various things to happen to people at random—often just for their own amusement.

Destiny is a much more sophisticated concept. It is the idea the each individual has within himself or herself certain qualities or potential, which, if carried out to their fullest, will produce a life path that will inevitably (not randomly) end up in a certain way. So, each person carries within himself or herself his or her destiny (there is no unseen outside force), and it is up to each person to fulfill his or her destiny, that is, live the kind of life and make the kind of choices that will allow that destiny to become a reality.
